Are You Having Trouble Falling Asleep?

We've all been there.  Lying awake at night, tossing and turning.  Staring at the clock watching the seconds tick by.  For some people it's an occasional annoyance, but if it continues, it can be a bigger problem.  Lack of sleep not only makes you drowsy during the day, long term it can lead to serious mental and physical health issues.  That's why it's important to be proactive.  With a little effort and some life changes, you can live healthier with a good night's rest.

One common reason you may not be able to fall asleep is an improper sleep schedule.  Our bodies adapt to going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day.  If we don't follow the same schedule every day, our brains don't know when to go to sleep and when to wake up.  While it may be more convenient to stay up late and sleep in on weekends, it's likely going to keep you from getting to sleep on time during the week.

Not staying on a sleep schedule may not only stop you from getting rest at night, it may also affect the kind of sleep you have.  If your sleep is restless or you're not getting enough of a certain type of sleep, you'll find yourself feeling tired even when you get your full eight hours.

If you don't get enough sleep the day before, you'll probably get some coffee or other caffeinated beverage to get yourself going.  The problem is that the caffeine could be what's causing you to toss and turn.  Some people can drink a cup of coffee and go right to bed, but others need several hours or longer for the effects to wear off.  While caffeine withdrawal will probably leave you dragging for a while, if you lay off the coffee, you'll probably start getting enough sleep not to need it.

Stress and anxiety could be a big reason for your tossing and turning.  If this is the problem, you probably already know it.  You'll often find your mind running through lists and figuring out problems instead of sleeping or even going to bed.  To clear your mind and sleep better, try meditating before bedtime to clear your mind and ease you to sleep.

Another reason your brain might have problems shutting off is because you're doing other things rather than trying to sleep.  While watching tv, reading, or listening to the radio might relax you, it doesn't necessarily put you to sleep - in fact it might be keeping you awake because these are things your mind associates with being up and moving.

If you have tried all the things listed here but still aren't able to get to sleep at night, consider seeing a doctor.  While most people are hesitant about going on a sleep aid, the side effects are generally less troublesome than the side effects of sleep deprivation.  If you're not sleeping well, it can severely affect your physical and emotional health.

Getting back on track with your weight loss goals

No matter how hard we try to stick to a healthy lifestyle, sooner or later we all trip and start eating some junk food, or skip our exercise program for a few days. It happens, so don't beat yourself up about it. At the same time you want to make sure you get back on track as soon as possible. After all, you don't want to get too comfortable where you are. Hers are some tips to help you get back into a routine that includes healthy eating and daily exercise.

Don't Beat Yourself Up

The most important thing when you fall off the healthy eating wagon is to not beat yourself up about it. Sure, it wasn't what you had planned, but we all give in to cravings sometimes. Forgive yourself for it and move on.

If you don't you'll get into a vicious cycle of feeling guilty, which gets you depressed, which makes you eat. Because you eat even more junk food to ease the pain from feeling guilty, you get yourself in even deeper. Before you know it, you'll just give up yet again and slip back into your old eating habits. Don't let this happen again, forgive yourself for slipping and then.

Get Started Again

Get right back into your healthy eating routine. Don't allow yourself to give up. Fix a yummy salad, snack on some fruit or fix some grilled chicken and vegetables for dinner. If you are subscribed to the Healthy Menu Mailer, prepare the dinner on the menu tonight. The sooner you get back into your healthy eating habits after overindulging, the better. Your blood sugar will normalize, avoiding additional sugar spikes that could result in more cravings. It also helps to drink plenty of water if you feel like more of the foods that you really shouldn't be eating. Distract yourself, if those bags of chips or the pie in the fridge are still calling you.

Keep a Log or Journal

You may also want to start a food and exercise log or journal. This doesn't have to be anything complicated. A simple spiral-bound notebook will do. Write down what and how much you ate every day, how many glasses of water you drank and how much you exercised. A weight loss journal is great way to create accountability. Because you know you will have to write down that bowl of ice cream you're thinking of eating, you will skip it and pick up some frozen grapes or some fresh berries instead. Your journal can also be a big motivator. When you feel like giving up, review it and look at how much progress you have made in the past weeks.

Take these tips to heart when you do slip and get back on track with your healthy eating habits and weight loss efforts as soon as possible. A healthy menu planner like Healthy Menu Mailer can help you stay on track with your healthy eating.

Cheap, “Green” Beauty

While it's great that there are many natural and organic beauty products available nowadays, I'm going to focus on the "reducing" aspect of the equation. If you don't NEED it, you don't need to buy it, even if it's eco friendly. Here are some ways to be a cheap green beauty. :)

Eliminate stuff you don't need

Every beauty and skin care expert I've ever read said that noone needs toner (or astringent). Wash your face well and rinse well. Skip the toner.

If you have oily skin you probably don't need moisturizer, and if you have normal skin, your sunscreen might be enough of a moisturizer. Use a sunscreen daily and that's probably all you need. If your skin is dry, use the gentlest cleanser you can and you might need less moisturizer.

Most people, unless your skin is extremely oily, don't need to wash their faces with a cleanser in the morning. Of course it goes without saying that you should thoroughly cleanse your face at night, but as long as you do this, your face is clean enough in the morning. Just splash with warm water.

Exfoliation is important for healthy and pretty skin, but you probably don't need an expensive product. Use a very clean washcloth to gently scrub your face. Or put some baking soda in your hand and use that as a gentle scrub. Or sugar or salt mixed with a little olive oil. Olive oil makes a great eye makeup remover by the way!

Skip the allover foundation. Most people don't need it all over their faces but just a little bit under the eyes and around the nose. Use a little tinted moisturizer instead or try mineral makeup, which makes your face look flawless and seems to last forever.

If you curl your eyelashes you might be able to skip mascara and eyeliner. It opens up the eyes and really makes them pop. If I were stranded on a desert island, I would want my eyelash curler and lip balm! Keeping your brows groomed also shapes your face without needing a product. In addition to tweezing, try trimming the longer hairs that stick out after you comb your brows (use cuticle nippers).

Try multi use products

Dr. Loretta author of "6 Weeks to Sensational Skin" says that dead sea salts have multiple uses for skin problems: everything from acne to eczema. You can find Dead Sea Beauty Products here.

Body lotion or conditioner can double as shaving cream. Buy makeup that can be used for eyes, cheeks and lips, like Kiss My Face 3 Way Color.

Make your own

Making your own skin care products usually means you'll use far less packaging than if you bought everything. It doesn't have to be super complicated though. You can mix honey and salt to make a body or facial scrub. Or sugar and olive oil. Lemon juice, salt and olive oil are great to exfoliate and bleach elbows and heels. Here are more homemade skin care recipes.

Learn to love your natural look

Learn to accept your natural face. Freckles are cute and don't have to be covered up. Curly hair is beautiful and doesn't have to be straightened. Ask your hairdresser to help you choose a style that works with your facial shape and hair texture. The more you try to change your natural look the more money and time you'll spend.

Is Raw Milk Suitable for Children?

Got Milk? Raw milk, that is? There is an interesting debate between proponents and opponents of raw milk who have been asked this question: Is raw milk suitable for children? Before you weigh in with your verdict, here are the nuts and bolts of why this subject has become so intense.

The basis upon which these two sides cannot agree has to do with pasteurization. Raw milk has bacteria, but so does pasteurized milk. The difference is that the E. coli bacteria found in raw milk is less prevalent than in milk that has been pasteurized. Research has shown that children who are given raw milk develop a resistance to such diseases as pneumonia, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and other related illnesses. While we know that there is a high level of calcium in milk, scientists found that the growth of children drinking raw milk was far superior to those who did not ingest raw milk.

If you think about countries such as Africa, for example, a large part of the Masai's diet is raw milk. In other countries and regions where people rely on cows and other animals to provide nutrients, raw milk is at the top of the list.

While it is true that cows should be healthy and the milk should be fresh, scientific data has proven that raw milk has been found to be good for children, and that it contains high concentrations of calcium, iodine, and protein which are essential components in promoting good health.

On the other side of the aisle are the opponents of raw milk who strongly suggest that raw milk is as bad as poison. Their rationale is that children develop tuberculosis which is caused by the germs contained in raw milk. While scientists generally discount this theory, there was a study which disclosed that one child out of seventy developed this disease. The research goes on to admit that fourteen children who drank pasteurized milk, however, developed TB.

There is another part of the equation that these debates inject. According to opponents, farmers would have to purchase machinery to process the raw milk. What if they can't afford to? Proponents would counter with this argument: what did everyone do before Louis Pasteur came along?

While we know that pasteurization removes some nutrients and good bacteria, there is no scientific data that suggests raw milk is a bad thing. As a matter of fact, the data indicates that children and adults have become ill from drinking pasteurized milk as opposed to raw milk. Those who are drinking raw milk would do well to make sure their supply is clean. Many small farmers are very concerned about safety and cleanliness since they too are drinking the product! Not to mention, their bread and butter is their product so they have a real interest in not losing customers. Raw milk enthusiasts often point to many benefits they see in their kids with raw milk. Some of these include: dairy "allergy" disappeared, ezcema healing, even attention problems improving.

So there's the debate in a nutshell. Considering that so much research has been done to explain the effects of raw milk versus pasteurized milk, it seems possible that this discussion is largely based on a political agenda and not the nutritional benefits derived therein.

Five Reasons to Drink Raw Milk

If you are looking for a healthier alternative to pasteurized milk, here are five reasons to have raw milk instead:

1.  Raw milk is rich in proteins, enzymes, and vitamins.  Included in raw milk is bacteria that is not only beneficial, but which acts as an anti-viral agent as well.  In addition, the high level of calcium in raw milk allows for the strengthening of bones as well as increased growth levels.

A recent study produced these findings:  "Raw milk contains two and a half times more IgG enzyme that pasteurized milk."  Why is this important?  It can prevent diarrhea in infants.

2.  Raw milk's counterpart, pasteurized milk, is said to contain lower amounts of all of the essential amino acids, nutrients, and vitamins that are necessary in maintaining overall health.  Moreover, the "good" bacteria in raw milk is destroyed by the pasteurization and leaves the body more defenseless against other bacteria that can be harmful.  This is why pasteurized milk deteriorates while raw milk simply turns sour.

Research also indicates that there is approximately 33% more natural vitamin C in raw milk than in pasteurized milk.  Vitamins A, B, and C in combination with enzymes are all destroyed in the pasteurization process and thereby leave the gates open for pathogens.

3.  While regular milk only contains 16% casein protein, raw milk contains 80% casein. Casein allows for slow digestion of proteins that contribute to muscle growth.

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin found in raw milk.  Unless children consume a great deal of meat and eggs (or raw meat, which is not at all healthy), vitamin B12 can be missing from their diets.

4.  Research asserts that raw milk can prevent serious illnesses such as tuberculosis, asthma, flu, diphtheria, and related illnesses. It can also lower cholesterol. Pasteurized milk, on the other hand, has been attributed to the development of these diseases and can also promote dental decay.

In a clinical trial where approximately seventy children were given raw milk and pasteurized milk, one child who drank pasteurized milk developed TB.

5.  Raw milk has additional health benefits as well.  It can prevent osteoporosis, allergies, slow growth development in children, anemia, skin infections, and other illnesses.  Conversely, studies clearly indicate that pasteurized milk has typically been the source of illnesses such as tuberculosis, E. coli, and salmonella.

While these are just five reasons why raw milk is arguably better for you, consumers are slowly re-defining raw milk and its health benefits.  There are opponents who will never entertain the idea that raw milk is as beneficial as proponents claim, and this debate is sure to continue.

However, it should be noted that 1% of the population drinks raw milk and that in itself says something about where this argument may be headed.

Raw Milk is High in Protein

According to the dictionary, proteins are: "fundamental components of all living cells and include many substances, such as enzymes, hormones, and antibodies that are necessary for the proper functioning of an organism. They are essential in the diet of animals for the growth and repair of tissue and can be obtained from foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk, and legumes."  Raw milk is high in protein and here are the reasons why raw milk may be a healthy alternative.

Raw milk contains all the amino acids we need and since proteins consist of amino acids, it follows that we need amino acids to build protein. These proteins allow for easy absorption of iron, have anti-cancer properties, and anti-viral properties.  They also help prevent bacteria from forming on the teeth, which can cause cavities.

In addition, the protein in raw milk can rid the body of "bad" bacteria and provide antibodies that play an important role in resisting viruses and toxins. These proteins have also been known to decrease the symptoms of asthma.

It should be noted here that pasteurizing milk not only destroys the "good" bacteria and other necessary nutrients, but significantly reduces the overall amount of protein in the milk.

To further delineate the importance of protein in milk, take a look at a label on a carton of regular milk and 1% milk.  The protein amount is 16% or 8 grams for both.  In raw milk, the protein is 80% casein.  What is casein?  It is the protein consisting of amino acids which are digested at a slower rate.  This is important because it releases the amino acids over a seven-hour period.  The whey protein in raw milk is 20%, and its amino acids are released within an hour.

Why is slow amino acid release so important?  Ask any body-builder and he will tell you that it allows for increased muscle growth which is based upon how well protein breaks down in the body.  The slower the body absorbs the protein, the less likely the protein will be suppressed.

Other important components of raw milk are enzymes which are made up of different kinds of proteins.  One enzyme found in raw milk, for example, acts as an anti-bacterial agent.

While we know that pasteurized milk is void of some of the necessary nutrients and enzymes that are most beneficial to the body, raw milk contains protein and enzymes as well as vitamins necessary to maintain one's overall health.  Remember, too, that bacteria in raw milk also serves as a protective agent against pathogens.

Going Green Can Add Years to Your Life

If you haven't heard about the importance of everyone doing his part to save the environment, you probably haven't watched the news, read the paper or surfed the Web in decades.

The effects of our everyday actions on the environment can be devastating. They have contributed to pollution, global warming, animal extinction, and all sorts of other problems.

Going green has numerous benefits. Obviously it helps reduce our negative impact on the environment, and it can help turn around the damage that has already been done if we all work together.  But did you know that going green is also good for our health? What's good for the earth can also help us live longer, healthier lives. Here's how:
  • The more people eat organic, the more farmers will have an incentive to produce organic food.  This will reduce the amount of pesticides and preservatives used, and it encourages more sensible and ethical treatment of livestock. And eating organic is also much healthier for us.
  • Eating less meat and more fruits and vegetables adjusts the demand for these food items, resulting in greater production of produce and less production of meat.  Much more resources and energy are used for raising livestock and producing meat than for growing crops, so shifting the focus to crops has a positive effect on the environment. And since fruits and vegetables are packed with the vitamins our bodies need, eating more of them is very good for us.  It can help us maintain a healthy weight, too.
  • Carpooling or using public transportation helps reduce the demand for energy and the production of pollutants. Less pollution means cleaner air for all of us.  And by not having to navigate rush hour traffic every day on the way to work, we reduce our stress levels, thereby reducing our risk for such problems as heart disease.
  • Walking or riding a bicycle for transportation as much as possible reduces pollution even further.  And when done regularly, these activities are great for our health.
  • Using eco-friendly cleaning products helps keep harmful chemicals out of the water supply.  Not using these chemicals in our homes is also good for us and our families, because we don't have to breathe them and have less risk of adverse reactions.
We know that going green provides a brighter future for all the people, animals and plants of the world, but it has some effects that benefit us personally as well.  By doing what we can to protect the environment, we can also have better health, and hence a longer lifespan. With all these benefits, going green should be an easy choice.

Uses for Peppermint Essential Oil

More than ever, Moms are choosing to skip potentially dangerous prescription and over the counter drugs for natural alternatives. The great thing about many of these natural products is that they can be beneficial for more than one problem. A great example is peppermint oil. It has been traditionally used to help with lots of various problems. Here are a few just 5 uses for peppermint oil you can try.

Digestive aid

The most common use of peppermint oil is aiding in digestion. It helps promote the production of digestive juices, so you can use it on a regular basis to help your body. It also can be used to offer relief from digestive problems such as heartburn, nausea, gas, cramps, and even a spastic colon. You can use peppermint oil when you experience symptoms, but it can also be used to prevent symptoms if you have a chronic condition like irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint tea is also used this way.

Cold and flu

Peppermint oil has several properties that can help colds and flus. Peppermint oil is an expectorant, meaning it breaks up chest congestion. It has also been used to reduce fever, soothe scratchy throats and get rid of headaches. It's a great natural alternative to over the counter medications that may contain alcohol or other unwanted ingredients.

Mental stimulant

Rubbing a drop of peppermint oil on your temples can help wake you up and improve your concentration and memory. This is great when studying for or taking tests, or any other time you need to be alert and mentally clear. It's a great way to give brain a little boost without having to rely on caffeine. This can also be beneficial to help you feel better when you feel faint or dizzy.

Asthma

Peppermint oil contains menthol. This is the substance used in many conventional medications that can help clear up any breathing difficulties. The vapors produced from peppermint oil can clear out a stuffy nose, help with coughing, and even help stop an asthma attack (although you shouldn't stop conventional treatment).

Heart Problems

Peppermint oil has been used to help reduce heart palpitations. It is also used to make the heart beat better and improve circulation throughout the body. This can help ease several problems related with circulation difficulties. Peppermint oil keeps your blood pumping strong.

In addition to peppermint oil, you may also find some benefit from peppermint tea. You can even put a few drops of peppermint oil in water for a different, but effective peppermint drink. If you're applying the oil directly, it's best to dilute it in carrier oil before you apply. Peppermint oil is wonderful to have in your natural first aid kid. One caveat: don't use peppermint oil on young babies as it is too stimulating.

Organic Isn’t Just for Food

Upon researching organics and what is available other than food, it was not surprising to learn that there is clothing available made out of organic cotton. What was surprising was that 25% of pesticides and fertilizers are used in cotton farming.According to the WHO (World Health Organization), over 20,000 deaths occur as a result of pesticide poisoning because of the chemicals that are used on farms. The good news is that organic cotton, for example, has none of these chemicals whatsoever.

It has been reported that the UK has a wide variety of organic cotton available, and many organizations have banned the use of chemicals. What types of cloth is made from organic cotton? The answer is organic clothing for babies, as well as the rest of the family, bed linens and towels. In fact, organic clothing is on the rise and is not only readily available, but growing affordable as well.

If you cannot find organic clothing in your area, you can certainly find websites that sell organic clothing and other items as well. For example, some sites offer clothes for men and women, and shoes. You can visit the Soil Association's website for a listing or organic clothes and suppliers.

As we become more environmentally responsible, more and more households are turning "green". That is to say, they are becoming completely organic. This would include food, clothes, and other products that are organically grown.

One of the more interesting developments, and quite frankly, a relief to find out, is that you can now purchase organic paint. If you've ever painted your home, the odor and the chemicals in the paint can be overwhelming, especially if there are children in the home or if someone is allergic to paint.

Organic paint is free from petrochemicals, fungicides, and preservatives. It is made from natural wood resins, plant oils, and earth pigments. Another important note is that by using organic paint, you can reduce the carbon and ensure that none of the chemicals are released.

Here's another great reason to use organic paint. It can be added to your compost pile. While it is a bit more expensive than traditional paint, think of the benefits it derives. You can check online for more information on organic paints so that the next time you decide to redecorate your home, you have another choice.

As you can see, organic isn't just for food. There are other important ways in which organics can be used to leave your home healthier, wear clothes that are safer, and keep your children free from toxins and allergens that can cause undue harm.

Buying Organic: Healthier or Just Hype?

It is much easier to buy organic food today than it was ten years ago. The popularity of these products has lined the pockets of those in the organic food business, leading them to increase production. Chains of health food stores are flourishing thanks to the organic trend, and mass merchandisers are starting to stock up on organic foods.

The key selling point of organic foods is that they are healthier than their conventionally produced counterparts. By definition, organic products are produced without the use of any man-made chemicals, including hormones, antibiotics, or synthetic pesticides. Organic meat is obtained from livestock that is fed an organic diet, and so is organic milk. As defined here, it would seem that organic is synonymous with healthy. But that is not always true.

Truly organic animal products are certainly safer than those produced by traditional methods. They do not contain the toxins that can be found in regular ones, and in beef there is a much lower risk of mad cow disease. You also do not have to worry about ingesting antibiotics, which may cause antibiotic resistance.

When it comes to baby food, buying organic is definitely the way to go. Babies are more susceptible to ill effects from the pesticides and heavy metals contained in inorganic foods. The preparation of baby food also involves condensing the fruits, vegetables, and meats used, resulting in higher concentrations of these things. For these reasons, organic baby food is generally considered much safer.

Organic fruits and vegetables are often heralded for their lack of pesticides. While this is certainly a good thing, organic is not necessarily a lot better in this regard. Some fruits and vegetables do not retain pesticide residues easily, so they are generally safe as long as they are washed thoroughly before eating. These include avocados, broccoli, cauliflower, sweetcorn, mangos, onions and pineapples. However, buying organic apples, celery, cherries, grapes, peaches, potatoes, and berries is usually a good idea. These items tend to carry high levels of pesticides.

Processed organic foods may or may not be healthier than conventional ones. Many of them use a combination of organic and inorganic ingredients. They also tend to lose nutrients during manufacturing, decreasing their health value. For the healthiest possible product, look for labels that say "USDA organic" and read the nutrition facts on the container.

Organic seafood rarely has any added value. That is because the USDA has not developed standards for it. Seafood labeled organic may contain all sorts of harmful substances, yet it is legal for them to be labeled as such in most states as long as the USDA name or the word "certified" is not used.

When buying organic for health reasons, it is important to make sure that the food you're buying is 100% organic. If it isn't, you may not be getting all of the health benefits that you expect.

Organic farming and the environment

We know that organic food is better for us; it contains more minerals and less dangerous chemicals, but often we forget how organic farming benefits the environment and its producers. In addition to various other benefits, organic products put fewer pesticides, fertilizers, and other dangerous chemicals into the environment. This makes it beneficial for not only your family, but for other families now and in the future.

One major benefit of reduced chemicals from agriculture is an improvement in soil quality. Organic farming works to build the soil naturally through companion planting and crop rotations. This works with the natural system to keep the soil healthy. Traditional agriculture uses chemicals to supplement soil; treating the symptom without treating the cause.

Think all the chemicals from agriculture that end up in the plants or soil? Think again. Water from rain or irrigation doesn't all stay on the fields. It can run off into lakes, rivers, and streams. It can also seep deep into the soil and enter underground water supplies. And when this water leaves the fields, it takes all the dangerous chemicals with it. So even if you don't eat the food produced by traditional agriculture, you could still be getting these chemicals through your local water supply. And while many places control the amount of these chemicals, others can't. In many rural areas, the only available source of water is from the ground.

If you're worried about the effect these dangerous chemicals might have on your family, think of the consequences of working with these chemicals every day. People who work on traditional farms are exposed to fertilizers and pesticides more often and in higher amounts than your family will ever be. There are many cases every year of people being poisoned with agricultural chemicals; accidentally and intentionally.

Pesticides can affect wildlife in the area. If you kill off all the bugs, the birds have nothing to eat. Then the animals that eat the birds will also have nothing to eat. If animals survive, but still have chemicals in their system, they can poison larger animals that eat them. Another factor is that not all insects are pests. Many pesticides also kill beneficial wildlife as well as the harmful inhabitants.

What may be the worst affect of traditional agriculture is that its other practices make the need for pesticides and fertilizers greater. Planting the same crop year after year can make your plants more susceptible to pests. Failing to keep the soil from washing away makes the new soil require more fertilizers so plants will grow. Traditional farming is taking no steps to reduce their use of chemicals, just to make them greater.

In addition to the benefits of chemical free agriculture, organic producers work with the environment as a system. They promote conservation of water and soil and strive to keep the land the way it is so future generations can work the land as well.

Causes of Memory Loss

The first step in fighting memory loss is to determine the cause. Once you know what's taking your memories, you can determine the best plan to fight it. Here are some of the common causes of memory loss along with suggestions to help combat it.

The most common thing that causes memory loss is aging. As we age, we naturally lose some of the memory capabilities we previously had. One important thing you should always remember is that memory loss due to aging is a slow process. If you notice a sudden or steep progressive loss of memory, it's important to see a doctor immediately. If your memory loss is caused by a medical problem, early detection could be the key to treatment. Memory loss can be caused by Alzheimer's or other neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors, stroke, infection, or seizures. All of these are very serious and need to be treated as soon as possible. If you find you have a neurodegenerative disorder, you'll probably find it helpful to take the steps mentioned above along with your prescribed medicines and therapy. As with aging, you may not be able to prevent all memory loss from these conditions, but you can see improvement or slowed losses.

Have you been feeling kind of down lately? Clinical depression is often caused by (and may cause) chemical imbalances in the brain. If your brain isn't working correctly due to depression, this may cause memory loss. If you're noticing memory loss along with symptoms of depression like sadness, changes in appetite, and not want to participate in activities; you should seek treatment immediately. In addition to the therapy or prescription medication a psychiatrist may give you; eating right, exercise, and getting plenty of rest are good ways to help combat depression.

You may notice memory loss shortly after going on a new medication. Many times these drugs are simply making you very tired, which is why you are forgetting. Other medicines, particularly barbiturates, can just make you stop remembering things you used to. If memory loss from a medication is interfering with your everyday life, ask your doctor if there are any other options for treatment. You may also wan to look into herbal remedies which generally have fewer side effects than conventional medications.

This is not an exhaustive list of causes of memory loss, but it is a guide to the most common. As always, speak to a licensed health care provider if you are concerned.

How to Prevent Memory Loss

No one wants to lose their memory. Thankfully, there are proactive steps you can take to help prevent it or slow it down. If you're concerned about how to prevent memory loss, here are some of the most important things you can do.

Aging is a common cause of memory loss and obviously we can't stop growing older. However, we can eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and other protein sources. These foods contain nutrients that will help feed your brain and keep it working properly.

You should also keep your body in shape by getting regular exercise. If you are older and can't move as much as you used to, try to get up and walk as much as you can, every little bit helps.

Along with exercising your body, take steps to exercise your mind. Do puzzles that require accessing memories and using deductive reasoning like crosswords or Sudoku. Studies have shown that people who do crosswords regularly are less likely to get Alzheimer's disease. You can also make an effort to learn new skills and practice them regularly. This will help keep your neurons firing and your mind in shape.

The key to preventing memory loss is taking action early. The sooner you act, the more likely you are to be able to stop or slow memory loss. There are also natural remedies to help prevent memory loss.

Self Breast Exams What Exactly Am I Looking For?

I know I should be doing them, but exactly how do I do a breast self exam?

One of the most important things a woman can do to protect her health is performing a monthly breast self exam. This is the first line of defense you have against breast health. It can help you learn what healthy breasts look and feel like, so you can detect changes that may indicate cancer more easily.

Most people think breast self exams are solely for the purpose of finding lumps in the breast. The first step of the exam is to visually examine your breasts in the mirror. This way you can see outwards signs of a breast health problem, including:
  • Dimpling. You may notice a rippling or "pulling" of the breast skin and tissue.
  • Color changes. A darkening of the breast could be a sign of trouble.
  • Texture changes. Deep tissue changes are important, but you should also pay attention to what the skin on the outside of your breasts feels and looks like.
  • Size. It's normal for your breasts to be uneven, but one shouldn't be getting larger at a faster rate than the other once you're past puberty.
  • Fluid. Any fluid coming from the nipple other than breast milk is a cause for concern. You should see a doctor immediately if the is blood coming from the nipple.
  • Nipple changes. Notice the size and shape, and general appearance of your nipples.
In addition to these other conditions, you should feel your breast looking for lumps. Most breasts have a lumpy of fibrous texture, that's why it's important to look for changes, as opposed to simple lumps.

You should also be aware of the texture in each area of your breast and notice lumps that appear in a location they normally don't. For example, most women have a lumpier texture in the upper portion of their breasts, and a sandier texture underneath. If you notice a lump in an area where your breasts normally feel sandy, this may be cause for concern.

Most women will have lumps that appear naturally and then disappear by their next cycle. You should be aware of lumps that appear suddenly and don't disappear, or that change or grow over time.

Many women with naturally lumpy breasts can get frustrated because it's hard to remember every lump and notice changes. In this case, you can keep a journal every month. Write down how your breasts normally feel and any changes you notice from the month before. While this may seem embarrassing, it could save your life.

If you do notice a problem with your breasts, don't panic. Not all issues are due to breast cancer. Schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible so they can perform tests. Don't ever put off getting a problem looked at. Early detection could be the key to saving your life.

Healthy Reasons For Eating at Home

If you are looking for an easy way to achieve a healthy life for you and your family, one of the most effective ways is to eat in. Here are some useful tricks.

With our busy lifestyles, preparing your own meals is often exchanged with quick meals at fast food or casual dining dining establishments. Not only are these choices usually more cost prohibited than eating in, but also less healthy. You can dramatically improve the health benefits by staying in to eat.

Eating at Home Puts You in Control

Eating at home has many health benefits, but more importantly it gives you the options of what ingredients you decide to include or not include in your meals. Have you ever glanced at what a hamburger at a casual dining restaurant is made from- there can be tons of ingredients, some with names you haven't heard of or are unable to pronounce. When you prepare home-cooked meals, you can keep your foods natural and basic.

Do You Have Special Dietary Needs?

Another health benefit of eating in is that if you have special dietary restrictions such as limitations on fat in your foods, you can conveniently fix dishes that accommodate your guidelines. No need to fret if the restaurant has a low salt dish or if there is any extra sugar added to a dish.

Portion Control

One of the reasons that many people have gained weight is due to the portions that many fast food restaurants give you. They are much larger than recommended. If you eat at home, you can choose the appropriate portions for you and your family members, eliminating unnecessary food intake.

Food Allergens

When you eat at home, you can be more mindful in preparing foods, especially if you or a family member has a food allergy. Food allergies many times can be serious and possibly even deadly. Preparing food at home can eliminate the risk of an allergic reaction to allergic food reaction.

Quality Time

Another benefit to preparing meals at home is the quality of time spent with each other. Everyone likes to be pampered at times so it's okay to eat out once in a while. However, eating at home allows you to spend quality time with loved ones. Each person can take part in meal preparation so it's a shared event. By allowing children to participate in meal planning and cooking you are teaching them valuable self-sufficiency skills. The atmosphere is more conducive to sharing stories.

Make a pledge to prepare more home-cooked meals. The benefits of eating in exceed the time it takes to prepare a home-cooked meal. Your family will thank you in the end.

Alternative Health Diets

There are so many diets being touted as the best for optimal health it is hard to keep it all straight. In more mainstream conversation you might hear about the Atkins diet or the South Beach Diet but in alternative health circles you hear about the benefits of vegetarian or vegan diets, macrobiotic or whole foods diets, or raw foods diets. So which one, if any, is for you? Here is a brief overview of the more popular alternative diets and you can see which one would best fit your lifestyle and health goals. The important thing to remember when trying any new eating pan or diet is to listen to what your body is telling you. Keep a journal and evaluate how you feel, how your skin and fingernails look, weight losses, digestive issues you may have, and daily energy levels. Here is to helping you find the way of eating that will work best for you!

Vegetarian and Vegan Diets

As the name suggests, vegetarians eat a diet based upon plant foods (vegetables, fruits, beans, and grains) and they eat little to no animal products (meat, fish, poultry, eggs or dairy). Some vegetarians will eat select animal products only such as lacto-ovo vegetarians who will eat diary and eggs or lacto vegetarians that will eat dairy. Vegans on the other hand eat a strict plant based diet and usually their avoidance of animal products extends into other life areas as well and they will not buy clothing or other products that contain even tiny amount of animal products. Vegetarians and vegans often believe that plant based foods help them defend against disease and illness, that plant foods are less risky for contamination and environmental damage, and that eating meat based diets is a form of animal cruelty.

Since vegetarian and vegans diets are low in fat and high in fiber and other plant nutrients their diet is a far cry from the high fat, junk food diets so common today.

Macrobiotic or Whole Food Diet

Macrobiotic basically means long life in Greek. This diet is based upon eating grains as a main source of dietary nutrition and supplementing with other nutritious foods such as vegetables, beans, fermented soy, nuts, seaweed, fish, and fruits. The macrobiotic diet discourages refined sugars and processed foods, encouraging instead unprocessed or "whole" foods. Macrobiotic eaters also strive to eat the freshest foods they can find and for this reason they also choose to eat local foods that are grown close to their homes. For this reason they also eat very seasonally.

This diet also emphasizes the need for balance with some foods being labeled either yin or yang. No foods are forbidden as long as the proper balance is maintained. Yin foods would include refined sugars, alcohol, coffee, and dairy. Yang foods are most commonly meat products, eggs, and fish. Whole grains, vegetables, beans, nuts, seaweed and the like are all balancing foods.

Raw Foods Diet

The living foods or raw foods diet generally includes vegetarian/vegan foods but goes a step beyond and also eliminates cooked and processed foods. Raw diet enthusiasts believe that living foods have life giving enzymes that are destroyed during processing and cooking, rendering those foods toxic. They feel it is best to eat them raw. Their diet consists mainly of uncooked and unprocessed grains, vegetables, nuts, sprouts, fresh and dried fruits, seeds, beans, and seaweed. Raw diets also usually include a lot fresh juices and water.

Those who follow raw foods diets believe that this way of eating reduces risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes and greatly improves their energy levels, skin appearance, digestive processes, and weight loss efforts.

All of these diets will have benefits and drawbacks but hopefully with a little experimentation you can see if any of these diets or portions of them will benefit your own health.

Natural Remedies For Pregnancy Back Aches

Back pain is one of the most common pregnancy discomforts. With the extra weight that we carry, our sense of balance is thrown off. We also carry more weight out front with heavy breasts and a growing belly, causing pain. If you are an expectant mother and your back is killing you, here are some ways to find relief.

Your center of gravity will shift as the pregnancy progresses. When standing from the seated position rise slowly. Any quick movements could make you lose your balance and fall. Prop your feet up on a low stool when you sit down.

Exercise relieves back pain. Ask your doctor which exercises are allowed during each trimester of the pregnancy. Walking is the safest way to keep your back healthy. Maintain proper posture when walking to avoid further back aches.

Pelvic tilt exercises stretch the back out and feel fabulous! Kneel on the floor on the hands and knees. Arch your back and tighten your abdominal muscles. Hold for a count of five. Slowly bring your back to the starting position. Be consistent with the exercises to relieve pain, do these 3 times a day or more if you like.

Pilates is an especially good exercise for pregnant women. It can help prevent or treat back pain. There are plenty of DVDs with pilates exercise programs for pregnancy.

Lie down, but not flat to find relief from back pain. Place a pillow under the knees and another under your head. Or you can also lie flat on the floor with your feet propped up on a chair covered with a pillow. If you are not comfortable on your back due to the added weight of the baby, lie on your side. Use a body pillow to support your growing belly and a regular pillow between your knees. Curl forward in the fetal position to stretch the muscles of the back and the vertebrae.

Make an appointment at a spa. Some spas offer massage therapy for pregnant women. The treatments are relaxing and go a long way to relieve lower back pains. Check with your doctor to be sure that a massage is safe for you.

Use a heating pad or a hot water bottle. Warmth on a sore muscle can help to relieve the pain. Afterwards, have another person rub the warmed area to massage the muscle. This could go a long way to relieving the pain if done when it first starts.

If the pain is really bad, ask your doctor or midwife about over the counter pain relievers, how much to take and how often it can be taken. Avoid ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and other pain relievers while you are pregnant.

Back pain is a hard thing to ignore. During pregnancy, it is just one more thing that you don't want to have to deal with. Taking simple measures to relieve the pain when it first starts will keep it from getting any worse.
